SpaceBeam

My Android app for live visuals: point the phone camera at anything and turn it into a kaleidoscope.

I wrote SpaceBeam with the help of Gemini AI to make live visuals at parties without a laptop. It takes the phone camera, a video or an RTSP stream from another phone and runs it through kaleidoscope, distortion and shader effects in real time. Send it to a projector or TV via SmartView or an HDMI cable, and the phone is the whole visual rig.

Nine presets that blend into each other, two-finger gestures to zoom, rotate and pan, MIDI controllers for live tweaking, photo and video recording.

Below: a recording from the TRIKAYA x Waldklang party at Lieberscholli in Munich (fluids, Solar Smash, Fraksl and other apps sent through the kaleidoscope), and a Wired Kimchi session video made with the app.

Geistreich or Geistlos?

In my novel Der Kurator, art is either geistreich, made with human spirit, or geistlos: generated, spiritless. Where exactly the line is, nobody in the book agrees.

For my own stuff I can answer it, case by case. So every project on this site shows how much of it I credit to AI:

There is no 10/10 on this site so far. A 10 would mean I wasn't involved at all in making it. That hasn't happened yet. What a 10/10 project could be one day, and whether it would still be mine, is a question I find pretty interesting.

The number is my own judgement. You're welcome to disagree.
